Skin pigmentation is the coloring of the skin due to melanin; a pigment that gives color to the skin, produced by its specific cells called melanocytes. Irregularities in melanin production can occur naturally over time, or they may be stimulated by external stimuli or internal factors, resulting in an imbalance — hyperpigmentation, dark patches, or hypopigmentation, or lighter patches.
